Go through each area and classify it as secure, developing or weak. Do not make this judgement simply by asking, “Do I remember learning this?”

Test it.

Can you explain the topic without your notes?

Can you answer a straightforward question?

Can you apply the same knowledge to an unfamiliar situation?

If not, the topic probably needs further work.

Revision can then be organised into short cycles:

Retrieve → Review → Apply → Correct → Retest

For example, if a student repeatedly loses marks on synaptic transmission because they confuse the roles of calcium ions, vesicles and neurotransmitters, “revise the nervous system” is too broad.

The revision task should be specific: review synaptic transmission, explain the sequence without notes, complete targeted examination questions, correct the mistakes and test the same concept again several days later.

That is much more likely to improve performance.

Balancing Biology With a Medicine or Dentistry Application

Future medics and dentists face a particular challenge because academic work cannot simply stop while they concentrate on their application.

UCAT preparation can become especially demanding during the summer. Later, attention moves towards UCAS choices and interview preparation. Meanwhile, school assessments and predicted grades continue to matter.

Students therefore need to plan ahead.

A common mistake is allowing one part of the application to consume nearly all available time and then trying to catch up with A-Level work afterwards.

Where possible, maintain regular Biology contact even during busy periods. Two or three focused pieces of work during the week can be more useful than leaving everything for a long weekend revision session.

The objective is consistency.

A Medicine or Dentistry application is a long process, and students usually perform better when academic preparation and admissions preparation are treated as parts of the same overall plan rather than a series of emergencies.
